Wind Farms Power 70,000 Homes Despite Trump Opposition

Giant wind turbines are quietly changing America's energy landscape, and you can see them working right now off the coast of Rhode Island.

The Associated Press traveled 100 miles along the East Coast and found three of five wind farms already operating. Two are fully running, two are nearly complete, and one is halfway built.

The first major offshore wind farm in the U.S., South Fork Wind, borders the Revolution Wind site and has been commercially operating for over a year. Its 12 turbines generate enough clean electricity to power more than 70,000 New York homes.

The scale is stunning. These turbines stretch roughly three times the height of the Statue of Liberty, visible from about five miles away and even farther on clear days.

Workers are living on floating ships next to the turbines, using gangways to walk directly onto the massive structures. On Thursday, technicians stood at the base of one turbine, maintaining the equipment that keeps clean energy flowing.

The timing couldn't be more dramatic. President Trump ordered a temporary halt to leasing and permitting for wind energy projects less than a year after returning to office.

His administration has paused work on wind farms under construction, arranged a $1 billion payout to a French energy company to abandon U.S. offshore wind development, and added extra review layers for wind and solar projects. Federal judges have struck down some of these orders blocking wind energy development.

The Ripple Effect

While political battles rage in Washington, coastal communities face a very real problem: skyrocketing electricity demand with limited options for new large energy projects.

Hillary Bright, executive director of offshore wind advocacy group Turn Forward, points out that these energy policies hit people directly in their wallets. Utility bills are climbing as demand soars, but land-constrained coastal states have few places to build the massive power plants needed.

Offshore wind offers a solution that doesn't require finding scarce land or fighting over local space. The turbines stand far enough offshore to avoid most land-use conflicts while generating substantial clean energy.

The wind farms prove the technology works at scale in American waters, creating a blueprint other coastal regions can follow as they search for energy answers.

Despite federal resistance, the turbines keep spinning, the electricity keeps flowing, and the path forward for clean coastal energy looks clearer than ever.
