Wind Ships to Make Clean Hydrogen at Sea for $500M

Imagine a fleet of ships that never need fuel because they capture wind at sea, turn it into clean hydrogen, and deliver it straight to your port.

That future just got a major financial boost. UK startup Drift Energy signed an exclusive deal with Commenda Capital Partners to deploy at least 50 wind-powered hydrogen production vessels. The program aims to attract more than $500 million in project-level investment.

Here's how it works: These specially designed sailing vessels harvest wind energy while cruising the open ocean. Onboard systems convert that wind power into green hydrogen, which the ships then transport to ports, islands, and coastal users who need clean fuel.

The genius lies in what these vessels avoid. Traditional renewable energy projects face years of permitting headaches, grid connection delays, and massive fixed infrastructure costs. Drift's mobile approach sidesteps those barriers entirely by turning the ships themselves into floating renewable energy plants.

Ben Medland, Drift Energy's CEO, says the partnership proves their model is "bankable and scalable." That matters because turning a brilliant idea into reality requires convincing investors the concept can work at commercial scale.

The technology already earned approval in principle from RINA, a respected classification society, earlier this year. RINA called it the first energy-harvesting ship design to receive such recognition. Drift plans to launch its first vessel in 2027 before moving into full production.

Ulrik Andersen, CEO of Commenda Capital Partners, brings serious shipping credentials to the deal. He previously led major maritime companies including Golden Ocean and Avance Gas. His involvement signals that seasoned industry veterans see real potential in this approach.

Commenda will handle the complex financial architecture, including capital structuring, investor engagement, and setting up project-specific vehicles for each ship. Drift retains control of the technology, intellectual property, and hydrogen production systems that make it all work.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership could reshape how remote and coastal communities access clean energy. Islands and ports that struggle with expensive fuel imports might soon welcome hydrogen-producing ships as regular visitors. The model could also inspire other mobile renewable energy solutions that work around traditional infrastructure limitations.

As climate solutions go, turning sailing vessels into hydrogen factories feels both ancient and futuristic. Wind powered human travel for millennia. Now it might power our clean energy transition too.
