Wisconsin Seniors Drive 250K+ Miles Helping Neighbors

Lee Harmon, 86, has driven more than 115,000 miles for his neighbors. Alan Nevala has logged over 135,000 miles doing the same.

These two Washington County volunteers aren't racing each other. They're giving fellow seniors something far more valuable than a ride to the doctor.

For 13 years, Lee has been picking up seniors and driving them to medical appointments across a 50-mile radius of West Bend, Wisconsin. Alan started a year earlier and keeps a quieter profile, though his odometer tells a louder story.

Both men volunteer through Interfaith Caregivers of Washington County, which offers free transportation to anyone 60 and older. The service covers appointments anywhere within 50 miles, plus help with grocery shopping and yard work.

Executive Director Melanie Gonring calculated the impact for one regular client. The free rides have saved him more than $56,000 in private transportation costs over the years.

But the numbers only tell half the story. Lee admits he doesn't do this purely out of kindness. "It gives me a reason to get up in the morning instead of sitting, watching TV and reclining in the recliner," he said. "I got someone to talk to and visit with."

Alan agrees, though he uses fewer words to say it. After more than a decade behind the wheel, he's met countless Washington County residents and formed real friendships along the way.

The seniors receiving rides aren't the only ones benefiting from companionship. The drivers themselves find purpose and connection in every trip.
