Wits University Ranks #1 in Africa, Top 1% Globally

South Africa's University of the Witwatersrand has earned a historic honor: the number one university in Africa and a place among the top 1% of universities worldwide.

The 2026 Center for World University Rankings placed Wits at 200th globally out of 21,291 universities evaluated. The ranking analyzed 81 million data points to measure real-world impact, making it one of the most objective assessment systems available.

What makes this achievement special goes beyond numbers. Wits earned a global employability rank of 97, meaning its graduates are highly competitive in international job markets. The university's faculty rank of 87 reflects researchers leading groundbreaking work in areas like pandemic response, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and climate change solutions.

"This remarkable achievement confirms Wits University's position as a leading African institution with global reach and relevance," says Vice-Chancellor Prof. Zeblon Vilakazi. He points to scholars like Prof. Achille Mbembe, a Holberg Prize Laureate (the humanities equivalent of a Nobel Prize), as examples of the caliber shaping minds at Wits.

The ranking system differs from others by focusing on measurable outcomes rather than surveys or self-reported data. It evaluates four key areas: education quality, graduate employability, faculty excellence, and research performance.

This isn't Wits' only recent accolade. The World Intellectual Property Organization's 2025 Global Innovation Index named Wits the top-ranked university in sub-Saharan Africa for innovation performance, measuring how effectively institutions translate research into economic and social impact.
