Woburn Siblings Earn 5 Degrees, Break Guinness World Record

Three siblings from Woburn, Massachusetts just proved that excellence runs in families, setting a Guinness World Record for academic achievement that might never be broken.

Martin, Justin and Jasmin Marwad earned five bachelor's degrees between them in 2023, all from UMass Lowell. All three graduated with computer science degrees, while Jasmin and Martin also earned electrical engineering degrees at the same time.

Then they did it again. In 2024, all three earned master's degrees in computer science from the same university.

Their unprecedented achievement earned them a Guinness World Record for the most family members to graduate from the same university with degrees in consecutive years. When Martin contacted Guinness about their feat, he didn't expect much. "We were pretty amazed when it was accepted," he says.

The certificates arrived in late October, making their accomplishment official. Jasmin was just 18 when she earned her first two bachelor's degrees.

Why This Inspires

The Marwad siblings didn't take a traditional path to their record-breaking success. They were homeschooled, with their parents laying the foundation for their academic excellence.

But they credit UMass Lowell for preparing them for the real world. "The environment at UMass Lowell helped with meeting faculty and connecting with other students," Martin explains. "It helps you get into the mindset for your future career."

Now the trio is putting those degrees to work. Justin and Jasmin are pursuing Ph.D.s in computer science at UMass Lowell while working full time at Teradyne, a technology company.

Martin is channeling his entrepreneurial spirit into launching a tech startup. The family that studies together, it seems, succeeds together.

Their story reminds us that with the right support and determination, there's no limit to what families can achieve together.
