Woman and Dog Both Beat Breast Cancer Together

✨ Faith Restored

After battling breast cancer twice, Vickie Doogan adopted a dog named Dolly for companionship during recovery. Years later, Dolly was diagnosed with the same disease and both survived.

When Vickie Doogan adopted a poochon named Dolly in 2018, she needed a companion during her recovery from breast cancer. She never imagined they'd share an even deeper bond.

Doogan, 52, from England, was first diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at 39 after discovering a lump under her arm. She underwent chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation before being declared cancer-free.

At 44, the cancer returned. After learning she carried a BRCA2 gene mutation that increases breast cancer risk, Doogan chose to have a double mastectomy.

During her recovery at home, Dolly became her constant shadow. "She's the most perfect little dog," Doogan said.

Then in February 2026, Doogan took Dolly to the vet for what seemed like an upset stomach. The vet found a lump under one of the dog's nipples.

"The vet said she needed to have a mastectomy. I was so shocked," Doogan said. "I didn't even know dogs could have mastectomies."

Dolly underwent surgery to remove the cancer, which doctors determined was low-grade and required no additional treatment. The dog recovered quickly, just like her owner had.

Sunny's Take

The parallel between owner and pet is remarkable, but what stands out most is how both faced their diagnoses with resilience. "People said it's like she's mirroring how I dealt with it," Doogan noted.

Today, both Doogan and Dolly are cancer-free and moving forward together. Doogan wants others facing similar diagnoses to know there's hope on the other side.

"When I was first diagnosed, I was absolutely floored. Chemo was brutal, but thankfully I responded well," she said. "Now I'm living my best life again."

She hopes their story shows that while breast cancer is scary, patients can still live full, meaningful lives. The bond between Doogan and Dolly proved strong enough to carry them both through treatment and into recovery.

Their shared journey stands as proof that healing is possible, even when life throws the same challenge twice.
