Woman walking through neighborhood park carrying garbage bags filled with collected litter

Woman Fills 2 Bags Daily Keeping Her Neighborhood Clean

✨ Faith Restored

Ruth Wozniak turns her daily walks into litter pickup missions, regularly collecting two full garbage bags from her York Region neighborhood. Her dedication earned her a surprise recognition that left her beaming.

Most of us walk past litter without a second thought, but Ruth Wozniak grabs a garbage bag and gets to work. Every single day, the Newmarket resident transforms her neighborhood strolls into cleanup missions, often collecting two full bags of trash from local streets, trails, and parks.

"Jim Bond Park is a very pretty spot and seeing litter constantly really ruins the atmosphere," Ruth explained. "I didn't want to see it anymore, so I just started picking it up."

Her neighbors noticed. Joe and Mary Ellen Keenan watched Ruth walk through their community day after day, arms full of garbage bags. They saw her bring home empty bottles to add to her own recycling bin when public bins were full.

Ruth doesn't stop at picking up trash. Through her Facebook group, Little Litter York Region, she shares cleanup success stories and invites others to join the effort.

"The city can't be everywhere cleaning up every little bit of plastic and garbage," Ruth said. "If everybody picked up a bottle, a can or a wrapper, it would make a huge difference."

Her kindness extends beyond keeping streets clean. Ruth regularly fosters rescue dogs, helping nervous animals build confidence before they find their forever homes. She teaches them obedience and shows them patience during their walks through those same spotless parks.

Sunny's Take

Community members surprised Ruth with flowers, pet store gift cards, gas cards, and a donation to Project Paws Dog Rescue in her name. The gesture clearly touched her. "When somebody goes by and says 'thank you,' and having my neighbours say it means even more," she said. "I think it'll take quite a while before I stop smiling."

Ruth proves that one person really can make a difference, one piece of litter and one rescue dog at a time.
