Woman Finds Live Tortoise Dumped Behind Arizona Pet Store

Jaime Simpson went dumpster diving behind a pet store hoping to find supplies for a local dog shelter. Instead, she found a life that desperately needed saving.

Simpson and her partner were checking the trash on July 22 when they spotted something moving inside a small container. A baby tortoise, barely hatched, had been thrown away like garbage. Outside temperatures had climbed to 103 degrees, and the dumpster was crawling with flies.

"They literally threw out an animal," Simpson said in a TikTok video that's now been viewed over 5.5 million times. Her voice shook with disbelief as she carefully lifted the tiny creature to safety.

Simpson wasn't randomly trash picking. Local pet stores had told her they often discard perfectly good items they can't legally donate. She'd made it a habit to check periodically, rescuing supplies for rescue organizations that desperately need them.

This time, she rescued something far more precious.

The Arizona mom rushed the tortoise to an exotic animal vet within 24 hours. The good news: the hatchling was healthy, eating well, and ready to thrive. The vet identified it as a hybrid pardalis-leopard tortoise, a non-native species that must be raised in captivity and could grow larger than typical leopard tortoises.

Simpson didn't hesitate when offers to adopt the tortoise started flooding in. She's keeping him. The cost of proper care has already topped $1,500, but she's paying every penny herself and planning to convert a giant dog crate into a proper enclosure.

"This will be the most spoiled tortoise in the world," she promised her millions of followers.

Her commitment speaks volumes. Simpson lives with Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and epilepsy while raising multiple children and animals. Adding a tortoise that could live 80 years wasn't in her plans. But when life literally tosses you a creature in need, some people simply step up.

The tortoise now has a name, a home, and a future that looked impossible just days ago.
