Woman Gets Pacemaker After 30 Years of Mystery Fainting

For more than 30 years, Janet Mercel never knew when she might wake up on a subway platform, a grocery store floor, or even behind the wheel of her car. The fainting spells started in childhood and grew worse as she aged, happening as often as three times a week by her late 20s.

Doctors gave her every diagnosis except the right one. They said she was anxious, prescribed her anti-seizure medications, and even called her "an overstimulated, high-strung 20-year-old girl." Meanwhile, Mercel was running marathons and working full time between collapsing episodes that left her blue-lipped and unconscious.

The breakthrough came in 2014 during a tilt table test at NYU Langone Health. When doctors tilted Mercel upright at 70 degrees, she lost consciousness and her heart stopped beating for 21 terrifying seconds. Medical staff had to perform chest compressions to restart it.

Finally, Mercel had her answer. She was diagnosed with severe neurocardiogenic syncope, a condition where her heart rate and blood pressure would drop dangerously low without warning. Her seemingly perfect health and athletic ability had actually made the diagnosis harder to find.

Doctors recommended a leadless pacemaker, a tiny device implanted directly into her heart to regulate her heartbeat. In 2014, Mercel received the implant that would change her life.
