Woman Rows 3,000 Miles Solo, Wins Celebrity Fans Worldwide

Taryn Smith is surfing 40-foot waves and burning 5,000 calories a day while rowing solo across 3,000 miles of open ocean. The 28-year-old from Omaha has become an unlikely social media sensation, drawing support from Hollywood celebrities and everyday people around the world.

Smith departed the Canary Islands on December 14, rowing toward Antigua in what's known as the World's Toughest Row. She's the first American woman to compete in this grueling race as a solo athlete, rowing two hours on and two hours off, around the clock.

Her daily video blogs show both the incredible and the uncomfortable. Pierce Brosnan commented "Stay strong of heart Taryn. Mighty woman you are," while Sharon Stone offered breathing techniques and encouragement on tough days. But Smith's openness about struggle is what really resonates. "Those days I was calling my mom and crying," she admitted in a recent video after punchy weather threatened to capsize her boat. Smith spent three years training for this challenge. Her mother Shelly says Taryn "has always been a kid that thrives on adventure."

Why This Inspires

Smith's journey isn't just about personal achievement. She's rowing to raise awareness for Girls on the Run, a nonprofit that empowers young girls through physical activity and confidence-building programs. By sharing her fears alongside her triumphs, she's showing those girls that being uncomfortable and being happy aren't mutually exclusive.

She reminds herself that despite the pain and exhaustion, she has luxuries sailors of centuries past never dreamed of: painkillers, vitamins, a desalinator for fresh water, and the ability to call home whenever she needs to hear a familiar voice.

Smith is expected to reach Antigua within days, completing one of Earth's most challenging endurance feats.
