Woman's Cancer Vanishes After Simple Biopsy in Wisconsin

A 59-year-old woman walked into a Wisconsin clinic with a rapidly growing, painful tumor in her arm. Two weeks later, she walked out cancer-free without receiving any treatment.

The woman had noticed the lump just weeks before seeking help at Marshfield Clinic Health System. When doctors examined it, the growth had already reached 2 centimeters wide and was causing pain and discomfort.

Dr. Rohit Sharma and his team marked the tumor's location with tattoo ink and performed a standard needle biopsy to diagnose it. The results confirmed their concerns: myxofibrosarcoma, an aggressive cancer of the connective tissue that was likely to spread.

Only nine cases like this have ever been documented for this type of cancer. Scientists believe these lucky individuals possess certain genetic factors that allow their immune systems to respond this powerfully.

Understanding exactly what makes these people different could revolutionize cancer treatment for everyone. Researchers are now building a database of similar cases to identify the mechanisms at work.

"If we understand how the biopsy is making those cells visible to the immune system, we could harness it and develop drugs that do that too," says Caetano Reis e Sousa at the Francis Crick Institute in London.

The discovery suggests that teaching every patient's immune system to respond this way might be possible. What worked by chance for nine people could become a targeted therapy for millions.
