Women's Basketball Team Wins First Game After 0-14 Start

The Stanton University Lady Elks walked off the court Saturday night with something they'd been chasing all season: their first win. After 14 straight losses, the young team finally broke through with a 44-40 victory over Pacific Union College in Anaheim, California.

The 0-14 record tells only part of the story. Stanton intentionally scheduled games against powerhouse NCAA teams to build their skills and toughness for conference play, and that strategy finally paid dividends at Darling Pavilion.

The Lady Elks dominated defensively from the opening tip. They forced 26 turnovers and held Pacific Union to just 25 percent shooting, disrupting every pass and contesting every shot with newfound confidence.

Nicole Ros led the scoring with 17 points and sealed the victory by sinking seven of eight free throws in the final minutes. Najharae Young owned the paint with 11 points, 21 rebounds, and six blocks that eliminated any second-chance opportunities for the opposition.

Isabel Betancor energized the team off the bench with 29 minutes of hustle that included eight points, three steals, and three assists. After trailing in the first quarter, Stanton tightened their defensive schemes and outscored Pacific Union 16-12 in the fourth quarter to close out the win.
