Women's Freestyle Chess Championship Debuts in Germany 2027

Chess just took a giant leap toward equality by adding a women's championship to one of the sport's newest and most exciting formats.

The FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship will host its first-ever women's tournament in Weissenhaus, Germany in February 2027. The women's event will run the first weekend of the month, followed by the men's championship the second weekend.

This expansion comes after the inaugural Freestyle Chess World Championship drew global attention in 2026, when Magnus Carlsen claimed victory at the same German Baltic Sea resort. The format has quickly gained popularity for its fresh approach to competitive chess.

Kazakhstan's Bibisara Assaubayeva has already secured her spot in the 2027 women's tournament after defeating Switzerland's Alexandra Kosteniuk in a 2026 exhibition match. On the men's side, Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, and Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov have qualified by finishing on the podium this year.

The announcement signals a turning point for Freestyle Chess and FIDE, who ended more than a year of public disputes to join forces in January 2026. Their partnership nearly collapsed in February 2025 when talks broke down, but both organizations found common ground to benefit the chess community.
