Woodburn Meals on Wheels Seeks 10 Volunteers

Every week in Woodburn, Oregon, volunteers deliver far more than hot meals to homebound seniors. They deliver smiles, conversations, and the kind of human connection that helps older adults stay healthy and independent in their own homes.

Now the Woodburn Meals on Wheels program needs a little boost. The organization is looking for 7 to 10 volunteers to help keep their vital service running strong.

The work is simple but meaningful. Kitchen assistants help prepare and package meals Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Drivers deliver those meals to seniors in Woodburn and nearby Hubbard on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Those few hours each week add up to something remarkable. The program currently serves about 90 participants across six different routes, delivering 85 nutritious meals every week.

The meal site operates out of First Presbyterian Church on Boones Ferry Road. Volunteer coordinator Elijah Friday from NorthWest Senior and Disability Services oversees the program and handles new volunteer applications.

The Ripple Effect

When volunteers show up for a two or three hour shift, they're doing more than checking a box. They're helping older adults maintain their independence and dignity. They're often the friendly face someone looks forward to seeing each week.

For many homebound seniors, that brief interaction with a meal delivery volunteer might be their primary social contact. That moment of conversation and caring can be just as nourishing as the food itself.

The program also gives family members peace of mind, knowing their loved ones are receiving regular nutritious meals and wellness checks.
