Musical Beings, a startup company, just launched Tembo, a drum machine that replaces complicated buttons and screens with simple magnetic pucks. Users arrange beats by placing the colorful circular magnets on a wooden board, triggering different drum sounds as they go.

The design solves a real problem for aspiring musicians. Traditional music software and electronic instruments can take months to master, turning creative fun into a frustrating chore. Co-founder David Davidov told MusicRadar that most instruments take "so long to get to the fun part," and his team wanted to help people experience music as "something they do, not just something they listen to."

Don't let the playful design fool you. This isn't just a toy. Tembo packs serious features including a five-channel, 16-step sequencer, knobs for swing and tempo control, and two USB-C MIDI connections that let musicians sync it with professional recording software or other gear.

The machine runs on batteries and includes a built-in speaker, making it genuinely portable for creating beats anywhere. A microphone and sampler let users record their own sounds, transforming it into a miniature music production studio that fits in a backpack.
