WordPress.com announced a new Education plan that gives teachers and their students access to full-featured website building tools at no cost. The program includes everything a budding web designer needs: 6 GB of storage, custom domain names, backup systems, and professional plugins that normally cost money.

Here's what makes this special: it's not a watered-down student version. Students get the same powerful tools that run 43% of all websites on the internet, including technical features like SFTP access and staging sites that professionals use daily.

Teachers can sign up their entire class without entering credit card information or worrying about trial periods ending mid-semester. That opens doors for schools that can't afford expensive software licenses but want to prepare students for real careers in web development.

The program already completed a pilot run with 5,000 students across 27 countries. The results tell an encouraging story: nearly 89% of educators said the program improved their students' job prospects.

When the free year ends, students can keep their sites active for just $2 per month. If they choose not to pay, their work doesn't disappear. Every webpage, blog post, comment, and photo they created stays intact on a free basic account.

The Ripple Effect

This move tackles a real problem in tech education. While WordPress powers nearly half the internet, young people today often skip building websites entirely and just set up social media profiles instead. That leaves a gap between the skills employers need and what students know how to do.

By putting professional tools in classrooms, WordPress isn't just teaching technical skills. More than 81% of pilot program educators reported their students showed improved entrepreneurial ability. Students are learning to build their own platforms instead of relying solely on big tech companies to host their voices.

The timing matters too. Underfunded schools that couldn't afford premium web development tools can now offer the same quality training as better-resourced districts. That levels the playing field for students who might otherwise miss out on careers in web development and digital entrepreneurship.

WordPress.com maker Automattic unveiled the program at WordCamp U.S. on Monday, signaling a long-term commitment to education rather than a short promotional offer.
