World Cup Fans From 5 Countries Skip $15K Bond Requirement

Thousands of soccer fans just got unexpected good news: they won't need to pay hefty bonds to watch their teams compete in the 2026 World Cup.

The State Department announced Wednesday it's waiving bond requirements of up to $15,000 for ticket holders from five qualifying countries. Fans from Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Tunisia who purchased official FIFA tickets can now enter the United States without the financial burden that threatened to keep them away.

The bond policy, implemented last year for 50 countries with high visa overstay rates, required travelers to pay between $5,000 and $15,000 upfront. The money would be refunded after visitors left on time, but the requirement created a significant barrier for fans planning to support their national teams.

FIFA had been pushing for the exemption for months through multiple White House meetings. Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar said the goal is to "organize the biggest and best FIFA World Cup in history."

The timing matters. Hotel bookings for the tournament have fallen far below projections, with the American Hotel & Lodging Association pointing to visa barriers as a major reason international travelers are staying away.

This waiver opens doors beyond just the estimated 250 fans initially affected. As more people buy tickets and word spreads about easier entry requirements, thousands more supporters could decide to make the journey to North America for the June 11 tournament kickoff.
