World Cup Pitch: 27 Trucks, 10-Hour Shifts for Perfect Turf

When you watch the World Cup final this July, you'll be witnessing the result of months of planning and 10-hour shifts by dedicated groundskeepers.

MetLife Stadium in New Jersey began installing its tournament pitch this week, with 27 trucks hauling hundreds of grass rolls from a North Carolina farm over 12 hours away. The venue will host eight matches, including the championship game on July 19.

The installation started Wednesday at 5 p.m. and continued until 2 a.m. Thursday, with workers returning just eight hours later. Teams rolled out massive slabs of grass onto sand layers, then raked and fastened each section while removing dead clippings with leaf blowers.

"The team that you see behind me spend meticulous time and effort for two, three months beforehand to get what you see on match day," said David Graham, a senior pitch manager for FIFA. "They're the first teams in, in the morning; they're the last teams to leave."

Next week, a Zamboni-like machine will stitch the seams together, creating a seamless playing surface. The grass variety, called Tahoma 31 Bermuda, was specifically chosen to withstand New Jersey's summer heat, humidity, and frequent thunderstorms.

FIFA's preparation actually began back in 2016, with researchers analyzing climates across 16 host cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They identified just two grass types that could handle the diverse conditions, sourcing from 11 farms across three countries.

This year's installation faced unexpected challenges when harsh winter snowfall (over 54 inches in Newark) damaged the grass at a local New Jersey farm. FIFA quickly pivoted to Carolina Green Turf Farm in North Carolina, demonstrating the flexibility required for world-class events.
