Eunice Doehring still keeps her souvenirs from volunteering at the FIFA World Cup 32 years ago tucked away like treasures. The vintage uniforms, trading pins from around the world, and photo albums full of memories meant enough to save for three decades.

When FIFA announced they needed volunteers for the 2026 World Cup coming to Arlington this month, Doehring knew she had to apply. She calls this experience "2.0" for herself, a chance to relive the magic she felt in 1994.

Getting selected wasn't easy. Out of 30,000 people who applied, only 15,000 scored interviews, and Doehring became one of just over 5,000 chosen to serve this summer.

"Being selected to become a FIFA volunteer is kind of like winning the iconic FIFA World Cup trophy," Doehring said. "Seriously, a very competitive process."

Now she's preparing for long days at DFW Airport, where she'll work four to five days a week from midday until 7 p.m. She joked about needing to start a walking routine and hit the bicycle because the shifts will keep her on her feet.

What makes Doehring's story special isn't just her dedication to volunteering twice across three decades. It's her understanding of what the World Cup means to fans traveling from every corner of the globe.

"It's everything for them. You know, that's life for them, they love the sport, their country," she said. She knows that volunteers like her help set the tone for visitors who've traveled thousands of miles to watch their teams play.

This time around, Doehring brings her experience as one of four team captains, helping guide newer volunteers through their first World Cup experience. She's already making new memories for another photo album and undergone hours of training on safety, security, and other responsibilities.
