World Cup Winner Otamendi Returns Home to Fulfill Dream

World Cup champion Nicolás Otamendi is trading European glory for a childhood dream, signing with Argentina's River Plate at age 38 to finish his storied career where his heart has always been.

The defender, who lifted the World Cup trophy with Argentina in Qatar 2022, signed an 18-month contract with River Plate starting July 2026. He completed the paperwork just before joining Argentina's squad heading to the United States for the upcoming World Cup, which will be his fourth appearance at the tournament.

"Today I have the opportunity to be even happier, to wear these colors, which I haven't worn before, and to represent an institution like River," Otamendi said in a video on the club's social media. "As a River supporter, it's a dream come true."

The timing shows what matters most to the veteran defender. Despite still performing at the highest level for Portugal's Benfica and earning his spot on Argentina's 26-man World Cup squad, Otamendi chose to plan his homecoming now.

His nearly two decades abroad brought incredible success. Starting at Vélez Sarsfield, he spent almost 16 years overseas with clubs including Manchester City, Benfica, Valencia, and FC Porto, making over 450 appearances and collecting 26 trophies along the way.

Those honors include three major titles with Argentina (the 2022 World Cup and Copa América wins in 2021 and 2024), the Europa League with Porto, and nine trophies during his Manchester City years. Yet the chance to wear River's colors means something different.

Otamendi's choice reminds us that success isn't always measured in trophies or paychecks. After conquering Europe's biggest stages and representing his country at the highest level, he's choosing meaning over prestige.

River Plate coach Eduardo Coudet expressed excitement about the signing days before it was official. "He's a hugely important player, still performing at the highest level and a natural leader," Coudet said. "Hopefully we can build something special."

The reunion will be meaningful beyond Otamendi's personal dream. At River, he'll join fellow Qatar 2022 World Cup winners Germán Pezzella, goalkeeper Franco Armani, and defender Marcos Acuña, bringing championship experience and leadership to the Buenos Aires club.
