World's Oldest Footballer Scores at 59 After 4-Year Wait

At 59 years old, most people are thinking about retirement. Kazuyoshi Miura just scored a goal for his professional football team.

The world's oldest active footballer found the net Saturday for Japan's third-tier Fukushima United, breaking a nearly four-year goal drought. Miura scored in the 52nd minute during his team's 7-0 victory over Iwaki Furukawa in the Emperor's Cup.

It marked his first competitive goal since November 2022, when he was a sprightly 55. The forward has extended his contract with Fukushima through June 2027, meaning he'll be playing well into his 60s.

Known as "King Kazu" across Japan, Miura became the face of the J League when it launched in 1993. His career started with Brazilian club Santos in 1986, and he's since played professionally on four continents including stints in Italy, Croatia, and Australia.

Miura scored 55 goals in 89 appearances for Japan's national team before earning his last cap in 2000. He's been technically signed to Yokohama FC since 2005, though he hasn't appeared for them since 2020 and currently plays on loan.
