WSU Sophomore Rosemary Longisa Wins National Championship

Rosemary Longisa crossed the finish line Saturday evening and made Washington State University history in the best way possible.

The sophomore from Kenya won the women's 1,500-meter outdoor event at the NCAA National Championships with a time of 4:12.10, beating second place by a full second. She became the first female Coug to win an individual track and field national championship since 2003.

Longisa entered the race as the nation's top qualifier and proved she deserved that spot. Her win also marks the first individual national championship in any track and field event for WSU since 2011, making it a milestone moment for the entire program.

The victory didn't come out of nowhere. Longisa has been building toward this moment all season, including a 26th place finish at the World Indoor Championships and helping lead the team to a West Coast Conference championship.
