Two hours after Dale Steele passed away in February, his son Roger got a call that would rewrite the record books.

The World War II veteran's liver was 100% healthy and ready for transplant. At 100 years old, Dale was about to become the oldest organ donor in United States history.

"How could that even be?" Roger wondered. The answer surprised everyone.

Officials from Live On Nebraska, an organ donation nonprofit, explained something most people don't know. The liver constantly replaces its cells and regenerates, making its functional age usually less than three years old. Even in a centenarian.

Dale's liver was successfully transplanted just one day after his death, giving a grateful patient a second chance at life.

"One of the myths we hear out in the community often is that 'I'm too old to be an organ donor,'" said Kyle Herber, president and CEO of Live On Nebraska. "A case like this truly proves that there is no age limit."

Born near Ainsworth, Nebraska in 1925, Dale served in Europe during World War II before returning home to meet his wife Doris. They shared 72 years of marriage together.

Dale spent his life working hard as a cattle rancher, at a farming co-op, and selling irrigation equipment. "He had a strong body that was able to carry him through his 100th birthday," Roger said. "I think that came from hard work."

But it was Dale's generous spirit that defined him most. "If he could help people, he would," Roger remembered. "But he wasn't showy about it."

When the organ donation team asked about Dale's organs as his life neared its end, the family knew exactly what to say. "We consented without any hesitation," Roger said. "I just know his response would be, 'Well, if I can help somebody else, fine.'"

The Ripple Effect

More than 100,000 patients across America are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant right now. Nearly 400 of them are in Nebraska alone. Every day, approximately 17 people die while waiting.

Dale's century of service didn't end with his last breath. His generosity continues in a way that will impact lives for years to come, proving that it's never too late to make a difference.
