Wyoming College Hits Record Graduation After COVID Recovery

Faith Restored

Laramie County Community College rebounded from pandemic losses to enroll 6,342 students and graduate a record 858 people. The turnaround shows how community colleges can grow by matching programs to local job needs.

While colleges nationwide struggle with declining enrollment, a Wyoming community college just proved that listening to students and employers can flip the script entirely.

Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne watched its student body shrink to 4,970 during the COVID year. Fast forward to 2026, and the school is now serving 6,342 students while setting graduation records along the way.

The turnaround didn't happen by accident. President Joe Schaffer and his team studied what Wyoming employers actually needed and built programs around those gaps. Information Technology, Health Sciences and Wellness, and Business and Accounting programs grew fastest as students recognized the direct path from classroom to paycheck.

The strategy paid off in multiple ways. Last academic year saw the largest graduating class in school history with 1,070 credentials awarded to 858 graduates. The overall course success rate hit 83.7%, the highest level in recent years.

"More students are choosing LCCC because they see the value of an education that leads directly to opportunity," Schaffer said. The numbers back him up.

The Ripple Effect

The college's impact extends far beyond campus. Among graduates from applied programs who stay in Wyoming, average earnings over the first five years reach $65,820. That's more than $22,500 above Wyoming's livable wage.

Even better, 62% of these graduates choose to build their careers in Wyoming. Each one fills a critical workforce need while strengthening local communities with their skills and spending power.

The success shows what happens when educators pay attention to both student dreams and employer realities. Students get credentials that actually open doors, businesses find qualified workers, and communities benefit from professionals who stick around.

LCCC's momentum comes at a crucial time when many Americans question the value of higher education. This small community college in Cheyenne proves that affordable, career focused programs still deliver life changing results for students willing to invest in themselves.
