Xbox Turns Physical Games Into Digital With New Feature

Your stack of Xbox game discs is about to get a lot more useful, even without a disc drive.

Microsoft announced a new feature that allows Xbox owners to convert their physical game collections into digital versions. Starting August 31st, Xbox Insiders can test the system before it rolls out to all Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles in the coming months.

Here's how it works: pop a supported disc into your console and launch the game. The system creates a digital entitlement tied to that specific disc, letting you play the game on PC through Xbox Play Anywhere or stream it to other devices with Xbox Cloud Gaming.

The catch? The digital license stays connected to the physical disc. If you sell or trade your game, the digital version goes with it to the new owner.

Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox, says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc games will support the feature. Thousands of titles will be available at launch, with more added over time as publishers opt in.

The Bright Side

This move marks a refreshing approach to the industry's digital shift. While Sony announced it will stop making physical PlayStation games after January 2028 with no conversion option, Microsoft is building a bridge between physical and digital ownership.

The feature tackles a real concern for gamers who've invested hundreds or thousands of dollars in physical collections. As consoles increasingly ship without disc drives, those libraries faced becoming obsolete. Now they can travel with you across devices and platforms.

It's also a smart preservation play. Digital entitlements mean games remain accessible even as hardware evolves, addressing fears that purchased games might disappear when old consoles stop working.

Publishers control which games get supported, so not every title will convert immediately. But with thousands ready at launch and Microsoft promising ongoing expansion, the foundation is solid.
