Young Athletes Shine at Nigeria's Niger Delta Games Trials

😊 Feel Good

Hundreds of athletes across Nigeria's Akwa Ibom state competed for spots on their regional team, showcasing raw talent that has government officials celebrating grassroots sports development. High school students dreaming of professional careers got their chance to shine in boxing, basketball, volleyball, and handball.

Young athletes are showing up in droves to prove they have what it takes to represent their state at Nigeria's second Niger Delta Games.

The second day of tryouts in Akwa Ibom state drew massive crowds of hopeful competitors to two major sports venues. Four sports took center stage: boxing, basketball, volleyball, and handball.

At the Nest of Champions stadium, boxing fans got a show they won't forget. Jedidiah Bassey and Princewill Itoro delivered impressive performances in the men's 60-65 kg category with sharp punches and quick footwork. Sports Commissioner Paul Bassey watched from the stands, clearly pleased with what he saw.

Over at West Itam Sports Centre, every single registered athlete showed up ready to compete. The energy was electric as players battled for their chance to make the team.

High school student Godswill Edet, who plays volleyball at West Itam secondary school, couldn't hide his excitement. "I am delighted to be part of these trials, and I look forward to making my parents and Akwa Ibom proud when the main games commence," he said.

Another student, Esther Idongesit, is already dreaming bigger than just this competition. The handball player from community secondary commercial school sees professional sports in her future. "I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Akwa Ibom at a major competition, but I also hope to become a world-class handball player someday," she shared.

The Ripple Effect

These trials represent something much bigger than one regional competition. Governor Umo Eno's administration has made talent discovery a cornerstone of his ARISE agenda, treating grassroots sports development as serious business.

Commissioner Bassey praised the Niger Delta Development Commission and event organizers Dunamis-Icon Limited for creating opportunities that align perfectly with the state's goals. "The administration of Governor Umo Eno places a lot of premium on talent hunt and grassroots sports development," he explained.

The investment in young athletes is already paying dividends beyond sports. Students like Godswill and Esther are learning discipline, teamwork, and goal-setting while pursuing their athletic dreams.

Team Akwa Ibom finished sixth in the first Niger Delta Games and heads to Edo State from February 20-27 determined to climb higher on the podium this year.
