Young Breast Cancer Survivors Unite at New Orleans Summit

✨ Faith Restored

Hundreds of young women diagnosed with breast cancer are gathering in New Orleans to find answers, support, and community through the Young Survival Coalition summit. The event addresses unique challenges like fertility, family planning, and genetics that younger survivors face.

When Layshandria Harvin heard "you have breast cancer" at age 32, she felt like her world collapsed despite doing everything right. Today, she's helping hundreds of other young survivors find hope and answers at a national summit in New Orleans.

The Young Survival Coalition brought together young breast cancer survivors this weekend at the downtown Marriott. The three-day event addresses questions many older survivors never face, like preserving fertility during treatment and protecting young children from genetic risks.

Harvin transformed her own diagnosis into purpose. The former pediatric ICU nurse now serves as Manager of Program Events for YSC, connecting women like herself with the resources and community they desperately need.

"I get to work with people like myself, and get them information that they need, resources that they need, connect them with providers, and to see that they're not walking this alone," Harvin said.

Dr. Elisabeth Potter, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon from Austin, is speaking about patient-centered reconstruction. She said spending time with young survivors who have their priorities straight and refuse to waste time is a privilege.

The summit offers practical help too. Young survivor Kelly Rovetto launched Re-Femme, a free online platform where cancer patients can find everything from cold caps that save hair during chemo to virtual nutrition and fitness consultations.

The Ripple Effect

What started as a gathering for answers is creating lasting connections that extend far beyond the weekend. These young women are building networks that will support them through years of survivorship, from finishing treatment to raising families to navigating long-term health decisions.

The summit proves that when young survivors connect, they don't just share information. They create communities that transform fear into strength and isolation into belonging.

For hundreds of women in New Orleans this weekend, the message is clear: you're not alone in this fight.
