Zambia and Finland Partner on AI-Driven Healthcare

Zambia is bringing artificial intelligence to healthcare in a big way, and Finland is helping make it happen.

The two countries are deepening their technology partnership with a focus that goes far beyond paperwork and promises. Zambia has already moved from planning to action, piloting AI technology in 20 health centers designed to improve medical care and patient outcomes across the country.

Ministers from both nations met on February 5, 2026, to strengthen their collaboration on technology, innovation, and digital transformation. Zambia's Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati sat down with Finland's Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto to map out their shared future.

The conversation covered ground that matters to everyday Zambians. Nokia, the Finnish tech giant, has already trained 100 Zambian entrepreneurs in digital skills, giving them tools to build businesses and contribute to the country's growing digital economy.

Finland is also supporting Kopala, an initiative designed to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship in Zambia. The goal is to turn creative ideas into real solutions that Zambian innovators can build and scale.

The partnership addresses a critical challenge. Only about 34 percent of Zambians currently have digital literacy skills, creating a barrier to participating in the modern economy. Finland's continued support aims to change that by building digital competencies nationwide.

The Ripple Effect

This collaboration demonstrates how technology partnerships can create multiple layers of positive change. The AI health centers will improve medical care in communities that need it most. Minister Puisto highlighted that Zambia has engaged with Finland's SLUSH innovation platform, connecting Zambian startups with investors and knowledge networks. Finnish expertise is also flowing into Zambia's mining sector, where technology and know-how are being integrated with local companies.

Both ministers emphasized education and AI as central to their shared priorities. The partnership reflects a practical approach to economic transformation, one that builds capacity while delivering immediate benefits through projects like the AI health centers.
