Zambia Pilots AI in 20 Health Clinics with Finland's Help

This week, ICT Minister Felix Mutati and Finland's Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto met to review five years of partnership progress. They agreed to expand cooperation beyond healthcare into broader innovation support, including institutional twinning with Finnish innovation agencies.

The partnership is already bearing fruit in unexpected ways. Nokia, the Finnish telecommunications giant, previously trained 100 Zambian entrepreneurs, significantly boosting digital skills and enterprise development in the country. Now, discussions are underway for a formal memorandum of understanding to deepen that cooperation further.

The need for this collaboration is urgent. Digital literacy in Zambia currently stands at just 34%, a gap that Minister Mutati calls one of the nation's most pressing challenges.

"If Zambia is to fully participate in the future digital economy, this gap must be addressed urgently," Mutati explained. He emphasized the value of Finland's continued support in building digital competencies among Zambian citizens.

Finland's commitment extends beyond technology transfer. Minister Puisto highlighted that education and AI application remain central to both countries' shared priorities, with Finland dedicated to exploring new areas of cooperation that support sustainable growth and innovation.
