Zamfara Governor Equips Troops With 25 Armoured Vehicles

After years of instability that kept farmers from their fields and traders from markets, Zamfara State is giving its security forces the tools they need to turn things around.

Governor Dauda Lawal distributed 25 armoured personnel carriers to military and police units this week, along with an 80-meter surveillance drone that can cover 50 kilometers and stay airborne for eight hours. The equipment aims to protect troops operating in high-risk areas where violence has disrupted daily life for years.

The upgrades mark a shift from reactive crisis management to sustained investment. Through the Zamfara State Security Trust Fund, the government has created a steady stream of support for security operations instead of responding piecemeal to each emergency.

"Rural areas experienced instability, farmers faced uncertainty, and movement along key roads was cautious," Lawal explained at the distribution ceremony in Gusau. Markets underperformed, affecting not just individual income but overall confidence in the economy.

The armoured vehicles join an impressive fleet the state has already deployed. Over the past year, Zamfara distributed 150 new vehicles to police, security services, and civil defense forces, plus 20 Toyota Buffaloes and more than 600 motorcycles designed for rapid response in difficult terrain.

The state also launched Community Protection Guards, a homegrown security program that taps local knowledge for early warnings about potential threats. The guards received 60 equipped vehicles and motorcycles to ensure they can respond quickly when communities spot trouble.

Real-time aerial surveillance changes the game for forces trying to protect scattered communities across challenging landscapes. Command centers can now see what's happening on the ground and coordinate responses more precisely, reducing the dangerous blind spots that have cost lives in the past.

The investment also reflects growing collaboration between state government and federal security agencies. Regular coordination meetings now bring together military commanders, police leadership, and other agencies to share intelligence and plan joint operations.

Defense Minister General Christopher Musa praised the governor's commitment, recognizing that modern security challenges require modern equipment. When troops have proper protection and technology, they can operate more effectively while facing less personal risk.

For Zamfara residents who've watched their state struggle with violence for years, the equipment represents something bigger than hardware: it's proof that solutions exist when government commits real resources and sustained attention to protecting its people.
