Zamfara Governor Renovates University Medical Center

When Ahmadu Bello University's medical center needed a lifeline, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal stepped up to save the facility where thousands seek care.

The governor approved full renovation and upgrades for the medical center, locally known as the Sickbay, on the university's main campus in Zaria. The project officially launched on July 25, 2026, when state officials met with university leadership to hand over the construction site.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Adamu Ahmed requested the intervention because the aging facility serves the highest enrollment of national health insurance members among campus medical centers. The building desperately needed modernization to continue serving students, faculty, and staff.

Governor Lawal, an alumnus of the university, responded immediately to the request. His team arrived with architects, engineers, and contractors ready to start work right away.

"His Excellency is always ready to intervene in areas like this for the betterment of education at his alma mater," said Arc. Ibrahim Mohammed Agige, the governor's Special Adviser on Infrastructure. The state awarded the contract to Lakeside Ventures Limited, which committed to delivering quality results quickly.

The Ripple Effect

This renovation reaches far beyond fixing one building. Ahmadu Bello University, founded in 1962, stands as Nigeria's premier northern university and serves thousands of students pursuing everything from agriculture to medicine.

Upgrading the medical center means better emergency care, improved preventive health services, and more reliable treatment options for an entire academic community. Students will study better when they can access quality healthcare close to campus.

Prof. Ahmed noted that Governor Lawal's support extends beyond his official duties. "What Governor Dauda Lawal is doing for ABU goes beyond being an alumnus," the Vice Chancellor said, adding that the governor continues contributing to the university's legacy even before taking office.

The project represents a model for how state leaders can support education infrastructure in neighboring regions. When governors invest in universities beyond their state borders, everyone benefits from stronger educational institutions across Nigeria.
