Zheng Qinwen Fights Back From Surgery to Stun US Open

A year ago, Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen was recovering from elbow surgery, watching her world ranking plummet outside the top 100. Today, she's beating Grand Slam champions and reminding everyone why she wore gold in Paris.

The 23-year-old Chinese tennis star pulled off another miraculous comeback at the US Open on Sunday, defeating Poland's eighth-seed Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. Just two days earlier, Zheng had trailed Madison Keys 5-0 in the final set before winning seven straight games, and she did it again against Swiatek.

Zheng's journey back to elite tennis hasn't been easy. After elbow surgery in July 2025 threatened her career, she struggled to regain her form for months. She entered this year's US Open ranked so low she had to fight through three qualifying rounds just to make the main draw.

Now she's on a seven-match winning streak in New York and closing in on the top 50 again. Her only previous win against Swiatek came at the 2024 Olympics, where she claimed China's first singles gold medal in tennis.

For Swiatek, the loss marks the end of a disappointing Grand Slam season. The six-time major champion will finish 2026 without winning any of tennis's four biggest tournaments for the first time since 2021.

The young champion's resilience echoes Emma Raducanu's fairytale run from qualifier to champion at this same tournament in 2021. When asked if she was tired after so many matches, Zheng's response captured her renewed love for the game: "I felt really pumped for my match, trying to reach better levels here and enjoy this fantastic stadium."

Zheng now faces second-seed Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals, carrying momentum that only comes from overcoming the kind of adversity that ends many careers.
