A Canadian startup just proved that simple "blankets" made of wood shavings and coconut fiber can stop rapidly eroding permafrost from releasing massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. While permafrost without protection retreated 5 meters over one summer, the blanketed area showed zero erosion.
Scientists discovered that melting permafrost triggers a natural process that pulls carbon dioxide from the air, sometimes removing more than the greenhouse gases released. This surprising geological effect could reshape how we understand climate change in frozen regions.
A 14,000-year-old wolf pup preserved in Siberian permafrost had eaten woolly rhinoceros meat before it died, and scientists just used that ancient meal to piece together the extinct giant's complete DNA. This breakthrough marks the first time researchers have reconstructed an entire genome from digestive tissue.
