There's something magical about seeing your work bloom everywhere you drive, and that's exactly what 150 Maple Grove volunteers created this week.
The Minnesota city hosted its annual boulevard planting event, where community members planted colorful flower beds along the medians of Weaver Lake Drive and Elm Creek Boulevard. The tradition has been bringing neighbors together for more than 25 years, turning ordinary roadways into gardens that brighten every commute.
The city provides everything volunteers need: plants from Lynde Greenhouse and Nursery, tools, and even maps showing exactly where each flower should go. Residents just bring their enthusiasm and willingness to get their hands dirty.
Holly Steffenhagen, recreation supervisor for special events in Maple Grove, says the appeal is simple. "I think people like being able to physically help beautify the city, to get their hands dirty, and to do something they like to do," she explained.

Bryan Patrick brought his entire team from Midwest Interventional Systems to plant near their office. He says the outdoor project offers something rare in their daily work lives. "You get to see the work when you're done with it," Patrick said. "We don't always get to see that in the office every day."
The Ripple Effect
What starts as a single day of planting creates beauty that lasts through summer and fall. Every driver who passes these medians gets a daily reminder that their community cares about making their city beautiful.
The volunteer event strengthens more than flower beds. It builds connections between neighbors, gives office teams a chance to work together outside, and creates shared pride in the community's appearance.
While this year's planting spots filled up quickly, Maple Grove's parks department welcomes volunteers throughout the year. Interest forms are available on the city's parks and recreation page for anyone wanting to join future projects.
Those flower beds will keep growing and blooming all season long, a living testament to what happens when a community works together.
