A routine meal delivery turned into a life-saving moment when a 19-year-old volunteer arrived at exactly the right time.

Alekzander Dzivak was making his usual Meals on Wheels rounds in Fort Worth when he heard an urgent voice through a doorbell camera. Inside, Ms. Lana had collapsed in her kitchen during a diabetic episode and couldn't move.

When her phone alerted her that Dzivak had arrived, she used the doorbell app to call for help. Her mind was foggy, and she hadn't even thought to dial 911.

"She was giving me the code and saying she was gonna die, and please call 911," Dzivak recalled. He immediately called emergency services and stayed connected through the doorbell camera, keeping her calm while help raced to her home.

"I was nodding and shaking my head. I was trying to keep her talking to me, keep her calm," he said. "It was a very scary situation."

First responders arrived in less than five minutes and stabilized her. For Ms. Lana, the timing was critical.

"If he hadn't come, I would've died. It was that far along," she said. "He came to the door at the right moment. It's just unbelievable."

She described the terror of being completely alone during the episode. "I was petrified because I've never been that bad before. I knew I was by myself… there just wasn't any way I could get hold of anybody."

Sunny's Take

Dzivak is one of the youngest Meals on Wheels volunteers in Tarrant County, handling two delivery routes each week. But on this day, he became something more than a delivery driver.

"I was very happy I arrived when I did, because I don't know what would've happened had I shown up later," he said. The experience created a lasting bond between them that goes far beyond a simple meal delivery.

For Dzivak, the moment reinforced why he volunteers in the first place. "Any impact you're able to make is amazing. I find it so rewarding to volunteer."

Sometimes being in the right place at the right time is all it takes to change everything.
