200 California Students Learn Leadership From NASA Scientists

Nearly 200 Orange County high school students just got a masterclass in their futures from people building electric aircraft, exploring space, and creating AI for NASA.

The OC Pathways Student Leadership Summit brought together 100 student ambassadors and peers from across Orange County on July 30 for a day of career exploration and hands-on learning. Students representing all 15 career sectors offered through county high school pathways connected with STEM professionals who are shaping the future of aviation, space exploration, and environmental technology.

The innovators' panel featured professionals at the cutting edge of their fields. Andy Chen, a composite manufacturing engineer at Joby Aviation, shared his work on electric aircraft. Linh Le from Blue Origin talked about engineering spacecraft components. Michael Arens, founder of Clean Earth Rovers, discussed environmental solutions. Dr. Disha Sordana from NASA's Open Science initiatives explained how she uses artificial intelligence for space exploration.

These professionals didn't just share success stories. They talked candidly about failures, setbacks, and the resilience needed to turn challenges into breakthroughs.

Dennis Cole, Chief of Staff at the Orange County Department of Education, set the tone early. "Leadership is more than just running the show or being on the stage," he told students. "Leadership is listening to the people around you and hearing the needs they have, and then having compassion and care for them."

Six former student ambassadors returned to share how the program shaped their paths. Now attending schools like Barnard College, Chapman University, and the University of San Diego, they encouraged current students to step outside their comfort zones.

Mishaal Mahmood, now at Barnard College, offered practical advice on finding mentors. "When people share your passion, when you can talk to them about things, sometimes that is what mentorship looks like," she said. "Maybe they don't have something to give you, but they'll know people that can help you and they want to see you succeed."

The Ripple Effect

The summit introduced students to the OC Pathways Impact Project, where they'll spend the coming year developing solutions to real needs in their communities. Through interactive sessions on personal branding, design thinking, and entrepreneurial problem solving, students gained tools to turn their ideas into action.

Crystal Meyer, coordinator of Career Education and Workforce Development at OCDE, explained the program's vision. "To empower these students and give them agency, we've created this program to give them a platform to serve as leaders and be the voices of their pathways," she said.

The connections made at this summit will extend far beyond a single day, creating networks between students, industry professionals, and mentors who share their passions.

These 200 students are now equipped with professional connections, real world insights, and a year ahead to make their mark.
