72-Year-Old Nurse Begins Medical Residency After 45 Years

Dawn Zuidgeest-Craft is about to start something most people finish before they turn 30: her medical residency.

For 45 years, she told herself she'd apply to medical school someday. Life kept getting in the way, pushing her dream further down the road while she built a successful career as a neonatal nurse practitioner.

Then her husband nearly died from a health scare. Sitting together afterward, Dawn asked him about his bucket list. He wanted to travel the world.

"Well, I still want to go to med school," she told him. At 69 years old, she finally applied.

Dawn started medical school in 2022, initially planning to graduate without practicing. But something changed along the way. Now, just before her 73rd birthday, she's beginning a residency in family medicine.

The decision comes with unique challenges no medical resident has probably faced before. Her employer had to figure out how to handle a resident who's already on Medicare. The logistics are complicated, but Dawn isn't worried.

"I know what I'm getting into," she said on STAT's First Opinion Podcast. "I think a lot of young wannabes don't have a clue, but I have a big clue."
