99-Year-Old Dad and Son, 80, Claim Free Oyster Promise

For decades, a handwritten sign inside Wintzell's Oyster House in Mobile, Alabama made an unusual offer that seemed nearly impossible: free oysters to any man who turned 80 and walked in with his father. After all those years, Jimmy Rush and his 99-year-old dad Jim finally became the first known pair to claim it.

The moment was deeply meaningful for the Rush family, who now live in Florida but have been visiting the historic oyster house for more than half a century. Their tradition started in 1972 when Jimmy and his father began coming every Friday afternoon before riding in the Mardi Gras parade.

Over countless visits, that sign on the wall became more than just a quirky decoration. It became a family goal they talked about for 25 to 30 years.

Jimmy's brother Carl can recite the sign by heart. "Free oysters, to any man 80 years old, accompanied by his father," he said. The family felt confident their dad would make it because of his excellent health, and they were right.

When Jimmy's 80th birthday finally arrived, the family asked the bartender if anyone had ever redeemed the offer before. The answer was no. "So we said, 'We'll be the first,'" Jimmy recalled proudly.

About 60 family members and friends gathered to celebrate the milestone and watch the restaurant deliver on its decades-old promise with a dozen free oysters. For Jimmy, this birthday held special significance above all others because of that sign he'd been reading since 1972.

Jim, the 99-year-old patriarch, is a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He takes no medication and credits his faith for his long, healthy life. "I've been very lucky and very well taken care of through my God," he said through tears of joy.
