Arizona Builder Creates Adorable Micro-Camper From 1980 Mini

Ovrlnd Campers just built what might be the most adorable camping vehicle to roll through America this year. The Flagstaff company fitted a 1980 Mini 95 pickup truck with a custom pop-up camper that transforms the tiny vehicle into a compact camping haven for two.

The Mini 95 measures just over 11 feet long, making it comparable in size to Japanese kei campers. Despite its toy-like appearance, the setup delivers real camping comfort with 6.5 feet of standing room and a sleeping platform that stretches 74 inches long.

Ovrlnd won the vintage truck at auction for $22,000 and immediately saw its potential. The company designed a special "Chubby" version of its ultralight aluminum camper topper to fit the 4.5-foot truck bed, extending the sleeping area to a comfortable 55 inches wide.

The custom topper weighs just 280 pounds and features a high-rising pop-up roof with fabric windows for structural support. When deployed, the rear sleeping platform slides out to create a full bed while still leaving room to access the truck bed below.

The original Mini truck came with an 848cc engine and measured within today's kei vehicle size limits. Ovrlnd upgraded it with a slightly larger 1,275cc engine and gave it a half-inch lift by adjusting the rubber cone suspension to handle the camper's weight.

The Bright Side

This micro-camper proves that bigger isn't always better when it comes to adventure vehicles. At a time when American RVs have grown to monstrous proportions, the Mini 95 camper offers a refreshing alternative that's easier to drive, park, and maneuver on tight trails.

The low height means you can load bikes on the roof without a ladder. The compact size opens up camping spots that monster RVs could never reach.

While the 560-pound payload leaves little wiggle room after accounting for the topper, two people, and gear, the project shows how creative engineering can maximize tiny spaces. Ovrlnd's innovation demonstrates that comfortable camping doesn't require sacrificing half your paycheck on fuel or squeezing into oversized parking spots.

The company's playful approach to this build reminds us that outdoor adventure should be fun and accessible, not complicated and expensive. Sometimes the smallest solution makes the biggest impact on how we experience the world around us.
