Ryder Helfrick has a knack for perfect timing, and Auburn knows it all too well.
The Arkansas junior catcher crushed a 446-foot solo home run in the eighth inning Saturday night, breaking a 1-1 tie and sending the Razorbacks to a 2-1 victory over Auburn in the SEC Tournament semifinals. The win punches Arkansas's ticket to Sunday's championship game against top-seeded Georgia.
The dramatic blast marks the third time in Helfrick's career he's hit a late-game, go-ahead homer against the Tigers in Alabama. In each instance, his home run set the final score.
"I just think he's a winning ball player," Auburn coach Butch Thompson said after the game. "That's what good players do."
Helfrick came to the plate having gone 0 for 10 in the tournament, but the slump didn't shake his confidence. He wasn't thinking about his previous heroics against Auburn or his struggling average.
"I just try to get a pitch you can handle," Helfrick said. "I got one I felt like I could do damage on."

The game was a pitchers' duel from start to finish, interrupted by a two-hour rain delay in the fourth inning. Auburn took an early 1-0 lead on Bub Terrell's second-inning homer, then the skies opened.
After the weather cleared, Arkansas tied it in the fifth when Camden Kozeal delivered a clutch two-out RBI single. From there, both teams locked down defensively as the tension built.
Why This Inspires
Relief pitcher Ethan McElvain entered with runners on base in the fifth and completely shut down Auburn's offense. He pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, striking out six batters without allowing a walk across 48 pitches.
Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn praised his team's resilience after the long delay. "McElvain came in and we were just hoping that he would get through that inning," Van Horn said. "He did a tremendous job throwing strikes and letting our defense work."
The defensive effort was remarkable on both sides. Arkansas pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts while Auburn's staff fanned 15 Razorback batters.
Now Arkansas (39-19) gets a shot at their second SEC Tournament title and first since 2021. They'll face Georgia, coached by former Razorback assistant and Arkansas native Wes Johnson, in what promises to be an emotional championship showdown.
For Helfrick and his teammates, one more win stands between them and a championship trophy.
