Army Captain Uses 1923 Maps to Stop Bengaluru Floods

Kumar didn't guess at solutions. He hunted down British-era maps from 1923 that showed where Bengaluru's original drainage channels ran.

Using these century-old blueprints, he traced forgotten waterways beneath modern construction. He identified illegal encroachments on drainage paths and helped excavate a buried 4-kilometer waterway that had been lost to development.

The next time heavy rains arrived, Kumar's neighborhood stayed completely dry. Surrounding areas flooded as usual.

His success wasn't a fluke. The restored drainage system worked exactly as engineers had designed it a century ago, channeling stormwater efficiently into natural reservoirs.

The Ripple Effect

Kumar's detective work has sparked a broader restoration movement. His efforts have contributed to reviving 14 ancient lakes across the city, bringing back natural water storage that developers had ignored for decades.

Other communities have started using his mapping method to find their own buried drainage systems. City planners are now consulting historical maps before approving new construction near water channels.

The transformation proves that sustainable cities don't always need expensive new technology. Sometimes the best infrastructure already exists under our feet, waiting to be rediscovered and respected.
