Australia Hits Record Renewables, Lowest Power Prices Since 2020

Australia's electricity grid just hit a milestone that seemed impossible a few years ago: record renewable energy output paired with the cheapest wholesale power prices since 2020.

The numbers tell an incredible story. Renewable energy jumped 37% in just one year, with wind up 20%, grid-scale solar up 12%, and rooftop solar up 7%. Meanwhile, coal generation dropped 5% and gas plummeted 30% to their lowest levels in over two decades.

Battery storage is the game changer here. Grid-scale battery capacity more than doubled in the past year to exceed 9 gigawatts. Home batteries surged 41%, adding enough storage to power thousands of households during peak times.

The result? Wholesale electricity prices in eastern Australia fell 47%. That's real money that could eventually mean lower bills for millions of families.

"Record renewable generation, combined with growing battery storage, continues to reshape Australia's energy markets," said Violette Mouchaileh from the Australian Energy Market Operator. "These technologies are supporting system reliability and increasing the amount of lower-cost energy available across the market."

Climate Minister Chris Bowen pointed out something striking: not a single day has passed in three years without a breakdown at a coal-fired power station. The old "reliable" baseload power isn't so reliable anymore.

Western Australia added 1 gigawatt of grid-scale batteries in just one year. Even mining companies known for fossil fuel advocacy are switching to renewables because they're cheaper than diesel.

Rooftop solar installations jumped 43% year over year, with nearly 340 megawatts added in July 2026 alone. Almost half of new solar systems now include home batteries, giving families power independence and backup during outages.

The transition isn't without challenges. Grid connection delays and permitting hurdles could slow progress toward the 2030 target of 82% renewable energy. Some communities still push back against new projects, though a massive 200-megawatt battery near Sydney just got approval despite objections from people living 800 kilometers away.

This energy transformation is changing how Australians think about electricity. Families installing solar panels and batteries aren't just cutting bills. They're becoming part of a distributed power network that's more resilient than old coal plants.

Mining operations running on renewable power prove that even heavy industry can make the switch. When it's cheaper and more reliable, the business case writes itself.
