Australian Hospital Pioneers Safer Stroke Prevention Surgery

Two Victorian women are thinking clearer and breathing easier thanks to a groundbreaking stroke prevention procedure now available in their own backyard.

Northern Health has launched Trans-Carotid Arterial Revascularisation (TCAR), a minimally invasive technique that treats blocked arteries in the neck before they cause devastating strokes. The hospital is one of only six sites across Australia and New Zealand selected to offer this advanced procedure.

TCAR works by making a small incision to access the carotid artery, the major blood vessel that carries oxygen-rich blood to the brain. During the procedure, surgeons place a stent to open the narrowed artery while temporarily reversing blood flow to protect the brain from stroke risk.

Dr. David Goh and Dr. Shrikkanth Rangarajan performed Victoria's first TCAR procedures last month. "We're really excited to offer this new technology to our patients," said Dr. Goh, who leads Northern Health's Vascular Surgery Unit.

The technique has been used successfully in the United States for several years. Dr. Gregg Landis, Chief of Vascular Surgery at North Shore University Hospital, called it "state-of-the-art treatment for carotid disease" and "likely the most advanced form of carotid artery treatment."

For patients Maureen and Sandy Hogan, the impact has been immediate and life-changing. Maureen came to Northern Hospital after experiencing a stroke, where doctors discovered dangerous plaque buildup in her carotid artery. Sandy traveled two hours from regional Victoria for treatment.

Just one week after her TCAR procedure, Sandy noticed remarkable improvements. Her thinking feels clearer and breathing comes easier. Both women expressed deep gratitude to the surgical team and staff.
