Battle Creek Graduation Rate Soars to 84% in Two Years

When Dr. Kim Carter looked at her district's 70% graduation rate, she knew one thing for certain: that number wasn't good enough.

Fast forward to today, and Battle Creek Public Schools has something to celebrate. Graduation rates have climbed to 84%, rebounding to pre-COVID levels and giving hundreds more students the keys to their future.

The numbers tell an even more powerful story when you look closer. Over the past five years, the graduation rate for Black boys has skyrocketed from 64% to 92%. That's not incremental progress—that's transformation.

Carter, who serves as superintendent, points to a simple but powerful philosophy that drives everything the district does. "We see every child by name, need and strength," she explains. The district treats failure as simply not an option.

The approach is refreshingly straightforward. Every student gets a personalized plan for success, complete with wraparound support and targeted interventions. No cookie-cutter solutions, no one-size-fits-all approach.

But there's another force driving students toward that graduation stage. The Bearcat Advantage scholarship covers up to 100% of college tuition and mandatory fees for eligible graduates. Carter, who grew up in nearby Kalamazoo and witnessed the transformative power of the Kalamazoo Promise, helped bring similar opportunity to Battle Creek students.

What makes the Bearcat Advantage unique? Students can use it at in-state universities and colleges, plus Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the entire nation. The possibilities suddenly become limitless.

The Ripple Effect

The scholarship isn't just changing minds—it's changing trajectories. Over the past year alone, Battle Creek has seen a 10% increase in students enrolling in four-year colleges and universities. More students are choosing higher education when the financial barrier disappears.

Carter sees the shift in her students' eyes and hears it in their voices. "They're really excited about the possibilities and the opportunities that exist once they graduate," she says. Dreams aren't just wishful thinking anymore—they're actual plans taking shape.

The superintendent isn't satisfied yet, though her pride is evident. Her goal is ambitious but achievable: reaching 100% of students with a post-secondary plan, whether that means college, trade school, or another path to success.

What started as an unacceptable 70% has become a model showing what's possible when schools invest in seeing and supporting every single student.
