Cali Rescuers Save 87 Lives After Colombia Earthquake

When a 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook Colombia on August 10, rescue teams refused to give up on the voices calling out from beneath collapsed buildings. Their determination saved 87 lives in Cali alone.

Emergency response teams and specialized brigades worked through intense hours searching through rubble in the capital of Valle del Cauca. Local and national authorities coordinated operations from the Unified Command Post, with rescuers arriving from cities across Colombia to help.

One rescue stood out among the many victories. A woman named Diana was located and pulled alive from the collapsed structures after intense hours of collaborative work. Rescuers, volunteers, and medical teams worked together to bring her safely out.

The earthquake caused severe damage across southwestern Colombia, with 45 structures suffering total or partial collapse in Cali. Another 93 buildings and homes sustained serious structural damage. Nearly 100 aftershocks followed the main quake, including a 4.1 magnitude tremor felt in Bogotá.

Despite the dangerous conditions, rescue teams maintain 24-hour shifts to guarantee continuous searches. They must periodically pause when aftershocks threaten damaged structures, but they always resume as soon as it's safe.

The Ripple Effect

The response showcases Colombia's solidarity in crisis. The Ministry of Defense deployed over 100 personnel with canine units to help locate people buried under debris. Bogotá's Mayor's Office set up four collection centers across the city, gathering drinking water, food, blankets, medicine, and hygiene supplies for victims in Cali, Pereira, Manizales, and Chocó.

Rescuers and technical teams from different cities left their homes to support the field work. Hospitals and temporary shelters opened their doors to injured survivors. The entire national disaster management system mobilized in what authorities describe as one of the largest rescue operations in Colombia's recent history.

Local officials confirmed that 949 people have been treated for injuries, while medical centers with greater capacity receive the most serious cases. Authorities maintain their commitment to uninterrupted deployment in affected areas, determined to reach every trapped person.
