California is making electric vehicle road trips easier for everyone with a $55 million investment in fast charging stations that can power up cars in minutes, not hours.

The California Energy Commission announced the funding on May 28 through the California Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project. The money will help install up to 1,000 new fast charging ports across the state, with most targeted for low-income and disadvantaged communities.

California already has over 201,000 public EV chargers, but most are Level 2 chargers that take hours to fully charge a vehicle. Fast chargers are different because they can add hundreds of miles of range in 20 to 30 minutes, making long road trips practical for electric vehicle drivers.

"Public investment helps overcome high upfront costs and fills charging gaps that the private market may not address," explained Bailey Muller, Senior Manager for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure at the Center for Sustainable Energy. The incentives particularly help renters and drivers who can't charge at home.

The program prioritizes communities that have been left behind in the EV charging buildout. Applications from low-income, disadvantaged, and tribal communities get moved to the front of the line for funding awards.

The Ripple Effect

This investment shows how infrastructure funding can create opportunity where it's needed most. In the program's previous funding window that closed in January, 64% of all installations went into disadvantaged, low-income, or tribal areas.

Property owners who receive funding must get their chargers installed and running within 450 days. Based on the January window, most chargers are up and running in just 103 days, meaning drivers could see new charging options in their communities by fall.

The $55,000 per port incentive makes the math work for locations that might not otherwise attract private investment. Chargers can be installed at any publicly accessible location in California, from highway rest stops to shopping centers to community gathering spaces.

As transportation is one of California's largest sources of emissions, expanding charging access helps more people make the switch to electric vehicles. When charging is convenient and fast, range anxiety disappears and electric becomes practical for everyone, not just homeowners with garages.

Applications are processed first-come, first-served, turning good intentions into working chargers that serve real communities with real needs.
