California just flipped the switch on a powerhouse that's going to keep the lights on for nearly 385,000 homes during peak demand times.
Arevon Energy brought its 300-megawatt Nighthawk Energy Storage Project online in Poway, just outside San Diego. The facility uses giant lithium iron phosphate batteries to store electricity when demand is low, then releases it when everyone comes home and cranks up their air conditioners.
The timing couldn't be better. California's electricity demand keeps climbing, and traditional energy grids struggle to keep up during hot afternoons and evenings. Nighthawk acts like a massive backup battery for the entire region, storing clean energy and dispatching it exactly when it's needed most.
More than 130 workers built the facility, bringing good-paying construction jobs to the area. Over the project's lifetime, it will generate more than $30 million in property tax revenue for local schools, public safety, and infrastructure improvements.
"Energy storage is becoming increasingly important as electricity demand continues to rise across California and the United States," said Justin Johnson, Arevon's CEO. "Projects like Nighthawk strengthen grid reliability while delivering lasting economic benefits for local communities."

The Ripple Effect
Arevon didn't just build a battery farm and walk away. The company partnered with local organizations supporting youth programs, first responders, special needs adult services, and climate education throughout Poway and greater San Diego.
Tony Rubino, president of the North County Special Needs Community Foundation, said Arevon showed genuine commitment from day one. "The company was enthusiastic about learning more and has been very supportive of several local special needs events," he said.
The facility signed a long-term agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric Company, ensuring stable energy support for years to come. San Diego County Supervisor Joel Anderson summed it up perfectly: "Battery storage is essential. This project strengthens our infrastructure, boosts our local economy, supports grid reliability, and provides enough capacity to power homes when we need it most."
Arevon now operates more than 6.3 gigawatts of solar and energy storage projects across 18 states, with another 370 megawatts currently under construction. The company is also building a 250-megawatt storage project in Daly City, proving that California's clean energy future is already taking shape.
Communities across America can now watch California proving that reliable clean energy isn't just possible—it's already powering hundreds of thousands of homes.
