Cape Flats Goalkeeper Jessica Williams Joins Danish Club

A goalkeeper who learned to play in the streets of Parkwood on the Cape Flats just signed with one of Denmark's biggest soccer clubs, and her journey shows how far talent and determination can take you.

Jessica Williams, 26, officially joined Copenhagen's women's team in September 2026 on a one-year deal. The Banyana Banyana goalkeeper never imagined soccer would carry her from Cape Town to the Danish capital, but that's exactly where she finds herself today.

Williams didn't even start as a goalkeeper. She spent her early years doing pageants and modeling, then playing midfield with the boys at school during breaks. A serious injury changed everything when she could no longer perform at the same level in the center of the park.

That's when Banyana coach Desiree Ellis suggested she try goalkeeping instead. Williams was reluctant at first, but she took the advice and hasn't looked back since making the switch in 2017.

Her skills from playing midfield still shine through today. At the 2024 Cosafa Championship, Williams scored a goal directly from a free kick near the halfway line during South Africa's 3-0 win over Eswatini. She also earned the golden glove award as the tournament's best keeper, even though South Africa lost the final to Zambia on penalties.

Growing up, Williams had limited access to watch women's soccer. She used to sneak her mom's phone to watch YouTube videos of her idol, American goalkeeper Hope Solo. "Then I'd finish the data and get whipping for finishing it," she remembers with a laugh.

Why This Inspires

Williams' move to Copenhagen came through Romaney Pinnock, who runs Badgers Football Academy in Cape Town where Williams has played, coached, and mentored young girls. Pinnock became Copenhagen's head of women's soccer in October 2025 and immediately thought of Williams when the team needed another goalkeeper.

After a successful two-week trial, Copenhagen signed her. The club's women's team is brand new, starting in Denmark's third tier just two seasons ago and now competing at the top level.

For Williams, the goal isn't just about making the national team, though she'd be honored if called up. It's about continuing to grow as a player and person while living in a city where South African soccer legend Sibusiso Zuma once made his name.

Both Williams and Pinnock hope South Africa will soon have a fully professional women's league, so players won't have to juggle full-time jobs with their soccer careers. Until then, Williams is showing young girls from the Cape Flats exactly what's possible when you chase your dreams across oceans.
