China just launched its first large-scale project to refurbish retired wind turbines instead of scrapping them. The breakthrough could transform how the world handles renewable energy waste.

Instead of sending thousands of aging wind turbines to landfills, China is giving them a second chance at generating clean power.
State-owned China Resources Recycling Group announced this month it has begun remanufacturing 25 wind turbines in Gansu province that had been spinning for over 15 years. The machines were scheduled for retirement due to wear and tear, but engineers completely overhauled them using new techniques to repair structural damage, strengthen performance, and restore transmission systems to near-new condition.
The refurbished turbines will get new jobs powering small industrial facilities and distributed energy systems. It's a solution that couldn't come at a better time.
China operates the world's largest wind energy fleet, with over 680 gigawatts of installed capacity. By 2030, more than 30,000 turbines across the country will reach the end of their operational lives, creating nearly 950,000 tons of waste.
Until now, operators treated retired turbines as scrap metal, salvaging only basic components and recovering just 30 percent of materials. The massive fiberglass blades, which can't be easily recycled, mostly ended up buried in landfills or burned.

The new remanufacturing process changes that equation dramatically. By refurbishing core systems and recycling blade materials, the project raises the total recovery rate to 70 percent while avoiding environmental pollution.
The Ripple Effect
This pilot program could reshape the global renewable energy industry. Lin Boqiang, director of the China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy at Xiamen University, says establishing a circular model for wind equipment would strengthen China's already dominant position in clean energy.
The company is partnering with local authorities to build China's first integrated recycling facility in Jiuquan. The center will handle everything from decommissioning to testing, restoration, certification, and redeployment, creating a blueprint for similar hubs across the country's major wind energy regions.
Zhang Min from China's Green Supply Chain Alliance says the technology challenges have already been solved. The next step is proving the business model works, with expectations that commercial-scale operations could launch as soon as next year as more companies invest in the sector.
Economics will determine how fast this spreads, since remanufactured turbines must cost less than new ones after all processing expenses. Lin estimates large-scale recycling could take at least five years to fully emerge, but China's market size and technical expertise put it in the best position to lead the way.
Every refurbished turbine keeps hundreds of tons of material out of landfills while generating clean electricity for years to come.
