Dog Saves Woman From Hypothermia in Virginia

A dog's unusual bark on a bitter cold morning saved a stranger's life in Ashland, Virginia, proving that sometimes our four-legged friends know more than we do.

Dan DiCandilo almost skipped his morning walk when temperatures dropped to 15 degrees on March 5. But Gozier, his loyal walking companion, stood by the door insisting on her daily routine no matter how frigid it was outside.

About 20 minutes into their walk, everything changed. Gozier suddenly stopped and began barking in a way DiCandilo had never heard before.

"The bark was a different bark in that it had a little bit of a cry to it," DiCandilo said. When he tried to pull her along, she refused to budge.

Her attention was fixed on what looked like a pile of snow in front of a nearby home. But it wasn't snow at all.

"It was a woman in a white robe, and she was barely moving, really struggling," DiCandilo said. He immediately called 911.

The woman lived next door to where she was found. She had been outside in freezing temperatures for three hours, and her body temperature had dropped to a dangerous 78 degrees, a level classified as severe hypothermia and a critical medical emergency.

DiCandilo later learned the woman had Alzheimer's and was known to wander outside during the night. Without Gozier's alert, the outcome could have been tragic.

The woman was rushed to the hospital and released just days later, making a full recovery. Word of Gozier's heroic instincts spread quickly through the community.

The Town of Ashland invited DiCandilo and Gozier to a council meeting to honor the lifesaving pup. The Fall Line Trail organization shared the moment on social media, celebrating the wonderful dog who acted when it mattered most.

On a morning when most would have stayed inside, Gozier's insistence on her daily walk and her refusal to ignore what others might have missed saved a neighbor's life.
